Reality check: Australia is a real country. This site studies the “Australia isn’t real” claim as satire, misinformation and internet folklore.

Primary where possible.

Wikipedia is useful for orientation; the library then pushes outward toward official data, original studies, DOI records and direct scientific services.

How to read the literature

One paper is not a verdict.

Strong research practice checks study design, sample, uncertainty, later replications and whether an effect is correlational or causal.

Association ≠ intervention

Analytic thinking

Multiple studies find associations between analytic thinking and lower conspiracy belief, but that does not mean a short “analytic thinking prime” reliably causes lasting changes.

Replication matters

Update with failed replications.

The 2024 registered report did not replicate two experimental effects from the influential 2014 Cognition paper. Both belong in an honest source trail.

Meta-analysis

Aggregate evidence.

The 2025 Nature Human Behaviour meta-analysis pooled 303 effect sizes from 67 experimental articles and 194,438 participants across 40 countries.

A note on repetition

Repeating a false claim can sometimes increase familiarity and perceived truth. APA consensus guidance on misinformation therefore recommends that corrections foreground accurate information and avoid unnecessary repetition of the falsehood. That principle shapes this website: the conspiracy claim is labelled and corrected prominently rather than presented as an unresolved mystery.

Prebunking versus debunking

Research reviews discuss both reactive corrections and pre-emptive approaches that teach people to recognise manipulation techniques. A 2026 multi-country study in Communications Psychology reported that short inoculation videos improved recognition of selected manipulation tactics across 12 EU nations. That does not imply every prebunking intervention works equally well; effect size, context, population and outcome measure matter.
